Domaine du Fontenay Naked Rosé 2010
(100% Gamay)
This stunning rosé is crisp but with a great depth of flavour, red fruits, and mouthfeel. A lovely pale colour, like a vin gris, with attractive red fruits and grenadine flavours
A little about the producer
Simon Hawkins the wine maker, happens to be a Brit, who initially came to the Côte Roannaise because he was working in the weaving industry. He makes an impressive 12 cuvées, and all of his wines are not chaptilized (sugar added), which is worth a mention as the practice is legal, according to France's strict wine making laws but alas, is still common within the region.
They feel that there is a certain irony in that an Englishman, who is using the methods that local growers’ grandfathers used and which they now consider to be outdated. They have turned the clock right back to use old fashioned, traditional methods: low yields, no added selected yeasts, no added sugar, no filtering at bottling and no additives at bottling - sounds great to us!
The most important thing about their Côtes Roannaise vineyards are the granite soils, an acidic soil. It just so happens that the gamay vine has a an empathy for acidic soils and as such, is the only grape variety that can be grown in their area.
